Behavior Management Techniques

April 17, 2017

There are a number of reasons why children exhibit negative behaviors from time-to-time. It could be an environmental reason, emotional or biological issues, or a form of communication. Here is a list of behavior management techniques that you can utilize. If, however, bad behaviors continue, Honu Intervention suggests that parents seek help.

  • Prevention. Observe your child and identify reasons that might trigger a behavior. Take steps to prevent these triggers or manipulate and alter the situations. For example, if your child tends to throw tantrums and gets aggressive around 8:30 p.m., start the bedtime routine earlier.

  • Set rules and expectations. Be clear on your expectations and use language that your child understands. For example, “we are going for a walk. You have to hold my hand” or “We will leave in five minutes. Please get your coat.”

  • Give choices. Giving your child options builds respect, invites cooperation, and offers them some power and control. “Do you want to eat spaghetti or lasagna?” or “Do you want to read Brown Bear or The Hungry Caterpillar before bed?”

  • Praise desired behaviors. Comment and provide positive feedback when your child is being cooperative, caring, and exhibiting generous behaviors. Positive reinforcement improves self-esteem and self-confidence! “I like how you thanked Mr. Gallo for helping you” or “You are doing such a good job at cleaning up your toys.”

  • Model desired behaviors. If your child does not understand what you are asking him to do or he is being noncompliant, help him follow through with the instruction by performing the action. Put his hand on his dinner dish and walk him to the sink when mealtime is done.
